One Key Flutes

Francois Devienne stated that the one-key flute was sufficient and that all those other keys  that makers were adding were not only useless but also compromised the sound.

It’s a shame we don’t have the chance to hear Devienne play! However, we have the chance to listen to Barthold Kujken and we don’t seem to feel the need for additional keys!

Essential in the simplicity of its lines (we must admit that keys are not pleasant to look at), the one-key flute remains an ideal of aesthetic purity.

I don’t willingly buy one-key flutes and therefore I don’t have large examples of one-key flutes to offer you because, unlike 19th-century flutes, it is essential to hear them playing (purchases are often made from a distance), the instruments are often compromised and there are instruments in circulation from little-known makers or even counterfeits (yes, even in the world of flutes, counterfeit instruments proliferate in the past and present).
