Beginning in the second half of the 19th century, a strong tradition of making Boehm flutes in metal and wood developed in Milano.
Although initially, makers imitated the best French and English examples, they soon developed splendid, high-quality instruments.
The best-known names were Rampone, Barlassina, Mauri, Maino, Bernucca, and Airaghi, who remained active until the 1930s and beyond.
Today these instruments are rare, as production remained limited to few quantities, a deliberate choice for quality and elitism.
