The sound of the metal Boehm flute raised many eyebrows among those accustomed to the sound of the wooden flute, derived from the Baroque flute. Although the metal flute allowed for nuances that the finest flutists could achieve, the nostalgia for the full sound of wood was never overcome, and wooden flutes stood alongside metal ones until the present day. Two schools emerged: the French, which favored the silver flute, and the German, English, and Italian schools, which favored wooden instruments. What more can I say? Perhaps the evolution of the silver flute was more marked than that of wooden flutes; with the arrival of the Japanese and other highly skilled craftsmen, the metal flute made marked progress compared to its nineteenth-century predecessors. In any case, the wooden flute has still its diehard supporters.
