Dubreuil, Lisieux, ring flute

Angot Louis Philippe (1839–1901) joined forces with Dubreuil Romain Désiré (1838–1923) in 1873, opening a workshop in Ivry-la-Bataille. Their production is known to have included transverse flutes and clarinets, but they also traded stringed instruments. The flute I am presenting is a simplyfied Boehm system flute with rings, but it has two distinctive features: the A hole lacks a ring, and the B–B♭ key is of archaic design, bearing in mind that this flute dates from the late nineteenth century. Several flutes like this one have appeared at recent auctions, confirming that the absence of the A ring is not an accidental defect. The flute bears the inscription ‘Système Dubreuil, E. Dubreuil Lisieux déposé’ on the body and ‘Système Dubreuil’ on the headjoint. The inscription “E. Dubreuil, Lisieux” suggests that the maker may have been Romain Désiré’s son, Louis Eugène, born in 1863 and died in 1899; however, there is no record of him having lived in Lisieux. Rosewood, length 66 cm, sounding length 58 cm, weight , A 440. Mechanics in excellent condition,
