On this page, I present a few old recorders of modest interest, some flageolets, and some modern recorders. Unfortunately, valuable recorders are extremely rare, having become “extinct” in the first half of the 18th century due to the great favour the transverse flute gained among the public and composers. It can be said that the recorder was forgotten during the 19th century, when even amateurs preferred to devote themselves to the transverse flute. Eventually, the recorder found a modest new lease on life in Anglo-Saxon schools as a basic instrument for learning music, and as such, it was debased by the ignorant public as a worthless toy. And to think that Bach had given it important parts in his compositions! Today, the recorder has regained its place in musical history, and thanks to excellent performers, it has amazed all those who scornfully called it a fife. As for the flageolet, I don’t know much about it; I’ll try to fill my ignorance.
