Antoine Hugot (1761-1803) and Johann Georg Wunderlich (1755-1819) were the authors of this "Méthode de flûte du Conservatoire" published 1804. It includes 24 duos, 6 sonatas and 32 studies starting to make a break from previous methods: airs, duets and other pieces typical of old tutors were replaced with exercises demanding hard practicing. This tendency would become increasingly marked in subsequent methods; the most obvious example is Devienne's method, which was republished till the early twentieth century with revisions and updates by important flautists who adapted it to the increasingly virtuosic music of the nineteenth century. A curious feature of this volume is the signatures that several students have placed on the first pages: but how many students must have studied from this volume? The cover bears the marks of many battles (like almost all instrument cases from this era), but the interior is very tidy: could it be that the students didn't study that much?
